Hiring a real estate agent can be a confusing process, whether you are looking to buy or sell. Assuring you have found the right agent can make the difference between a smooth transaction and one that is riddled with problems. Take the time to make sure you have found the right agent for you by shopping around and interviewing several agents before making a final decision. Use the following guidelines to interview agents to be sure you have found the right agent for you.

One of the first things you should find out about any agent you consider doing business with is how long they have been in business. Be aware that sometimes a new real estate agent can provide the enthusiasm you need to complete the transaction on time. That said; however, nothing can ever really make up for experience. If you do consider a newly licensed real estate agent be sure to find out whether they have an experienced mentor to guide them along the way.

It is also important to find out the agent’s ratio. Remember that years of experience won’t help you much if the agent in question isn’t a top-producer. If you are selling your home, look for an agent who has a track record of negotiating sales prices close to list prices as well as moving homes in short periods of time. For home buyers, look for agents who have proven they have the ability to negotiate low final sales prices.
